Wood, a Wise Choice

Beauty, durability and wellbeing for your home

Are you looking for warmth, durability and beauty beneath your feet? Choose wood. It is always a wise choice. Wooden floors are not just an interior design element; they offer numerous benefits for both the atmosphere of the home and the health of its residents. Discover the many benefits of wood and take a step towards a more beautiful, durable and healthier home.

A warm atmosphere and lasting durability

Wooden floors form the foundation of a warm and inviting home. They are beautiful to look at, pleasant and warm underfoot, and at the same time a durable and long-lasting choice. High-quality, well-maintained wooden floors retain their beauty for decades. The secret to the durability of a wooden floor lies in its ability to be sanded. The top layer of Timberwise parquet is approximately 3.0 mm thick, meaning the floor can be sanded up to two or even three times.

When the floor becomes worn over time, or when your interior design preferences change, a wooden floor can be sanded and refinished, making it look like new again. When properly cared for, a wooden floor lasts from one generation to the next.

Wellbeing and recovery

The impact of indoor spaces on our wellbeing is significant, as we spend a large share of our time indoors – as much as 80%. Using wood in interior design is not merely an aesthetic choice; it has been shown to have positive effects on people’s wellbeing and behaviour. Although the exact reason for wood’s positive effects is not yet fully understood, numerous studies have demonstrated its health-supporting and restorative qualities.

In general, touching a wooden surface is not only more pleasant as an experience, but also physiologically gentler than touching many other materials.

Studies by the Natural Resources Institute Finland and Tampere University in the Wood for Good project have found that the presence of wood reduces stress and blood pressure, and has a positive effect on people’s behaviour and social perception in indoor spaces. At its best, wood can serve as a health-supporting material whose presence has been linked to a reduction in negative feelings, lower irritability, increased physiological alertness and improved attention.

For example, comparisons between workspaces have shown that stress levels were lower in rooms furnished with wooden furniture than in other spaces. A similar effect has also been observed in schools, where pupils’ stress levels were lower in a classroom made entirely of wood compared with traditional classrooms.

Psychologically, the presence of wood can even affect people’s perception and behaviour. For example, in workspaces where wooden materials have been used, employees are perceived as more knowledgeable, successful and creative. The warmth and naturalness of wood can also increase employees’ comfort and commitment to their work.

Wood also has a positive effect on the relative humidity of indoor air. From the perspective of preservation, the optimal relative humidity for wood is approximately 35–60% RH. Excessive humidity can lead to deformation, while air that is too dry can cause wood to crack. It is therefore recommended to maintain indoor humidity between 35 and 60 percent to keep wooden materials healthy and in good condition.

This level of humidity is important not only for the wood itself, but also for human wellbeing. When indoor humidity is at a suitable level, it can help reduce respiratory problems, skin and eye symptoms, and other health issues that may be caused by air that is too dry or too humid.

An ecologically sustainable choice

Using wood indoors is not only beneficial for human wellbeing; it is also an ecologically sustainable option. A forest is a natural carbon sink that binds carbon dioxide from the atmosphere into trees and soil. Wood plays a significant role in combating climate change, and its ability to function as both a carbon sink and carbon storage makes it an essential part of measures that promote sustainable development. Investing in the sustainable use of wood, wooden materials and timber construction is a key step towards a more sustainable future.

The floor is one of the largest surfaces in your home. It is present in every room, and you feel it beneath your feet every day. By choosing wood as your flooring material, you make a wise choice for both yourself and the environment. Its warmth, beauty and durability make it an ideal and long-lasting choice for creating a warm atmosphere at home. In addition, the positive effects of wood on human wellbeing and our environment make it a sustainable, future-oriented option.
